Planting Forsythia For Flower Arrangements
Flowers From Your Yard
Forsythia bushes make a beautiful addition to your landscaping efforts. But, the real beauty of these bushes is that we can cut the forsythia branches and use them in our fresh cut flower arrangements. In the Winter you can cut the branches and use them to create Winter-scape arrangements. When Spring arrives you will have prolific yellow bell shaped blooms to use in your arrangements. And, then in the Summer, you will be able to use the branches as they have leafed out. They create beautiful branches of foliage for your DIY Flower Arrangements.
Planting Forsythia Is Easy
I have two different ways that I plant Forsythia branches. First, I just cut the branches in the early Spring and simply stick them in the ground about 4-6 inches deep. The trick here is to make sure that you keep the branches well moistened for several weeks. Here in Southern Tennessee we get a lot of rain in February, March and April so our soil maintains a great level of moisture to boost the root growth.
Another way that you can plant the Forsythia branches is by simply using a rock. I tend to use this method into the Summer or Fall season. All you have to do is scratch some of the dirt so that you remove the grass and then pull a long branch over to the ground…lay the branch on the ground and then place a rock on the branch to keep the branch from moving. By the next Spring your branch will have sprouted roots. All you have to do is cut the branch (removing it from the mother bush) and then dig up the rooted plant and replant in a more appropriate location.
Forsythia Branches Are Beautiful In Flower Arrangements
As a florist, I pay as much for foliage from my floral wholesaler as I pay for fresh flowers. I know that is hard to believe it is true. As a matter of fact…we would pay approximately $12.50 for 10 4 foot tall branches of Forsythia. That is wholesale cost…so you could expect to pay about $45-$50 for those branches retail. Now do the math… that would average out to about $5 per Forsythia Branch. It will take you about three years before you bush will have grown to produce 4 foot tall branches, but once it has reached that age, you will have plenty of branches to use in your floral arrangements. One Forsythia bush would literally produce hundreds of dollars worth of flowering branches and foliage for you. This is why I get so excited over the Forsythia bush.
